HERE ARE 10 OF OUR FAVOURITE CARS IN GRAN TURISMO 3

Dodge Viper GTS R Concept '00

Though the Viper GTS R may not be the fastest car in Gran Turismo 3 (GT3), it is one of the coolest. It never quite made it to endurance racing as intended, but what we’ve been left with is a Viper that still uses the brilliant V10, now with an exotic froth to match. Want one? All you need to do is score gold in every S Licence test - throwing your controller at the wall a mere 832 times in the process.

Polyphony Formula One

GT3 also saw the introduction of Formula One cars into the series, with a 10-race ‘Formula GT’ championship created to serve as a mock-up for the real thing. Gamers could choose from several liveries which mimicked those of real competition cars, such as the ‘002’ based on Ayrton Senna’s McLaren MP4/4.

Opel Astra V8 Coupé (Opel Team Phoenix) '00

An Astra which weighs just one tonne and has a top speed of 208mph, courtesy of a 460bhp 4.0-litre V8. It just sounds… wonderfully mad, doesn’t it? In the flesh, this car came agonisingly close to snatching the 2000 German Touring Car Championship. Ironic, then, that you need to win that very championship in GT3 to take ownership of arguably the wildest Vauxhall ever.

Toyota Denso Sard Supra GT

Sticking with the mid-game racers, let’s shine a light on what we believe is the car with the best livery in the game: the Toyota Denso Sard Supra. It was driven by Team Sard during the 2000 JGTC season, who managed to squeeze a huge 470bhp from its tiny 2.0-litre inline-four engine. In GT3, you’ll need to win the Amateur All-Japan GT Championship to be in with a one-in-four chance of obtaining one.

Ruf CTR2 '96

Based on the 993-generation Porsche 911, the Ruf CTR2 took Stuttgart’s finest and turned things up to 11. Powered by a 520bhp twin-turbocharged 3.6-litre boxer unit, it offers gamers a Vmax of 212mph from stock. This increases to about 685mph once fully modified, which is why it’s considered to be one of GT3’s great underdogs.

Ford GT40 Race Car '69

Though introduced in GT2, the legendary Ford GT40 only really found its stride in the third game. The history behind it needs no reminding to you lot since this four-time Le Mans winner is generally considered to be one of the most iconic racing cars ever. Taking this for a few time attack rounds on Seattle Circuit - which in GT3 is eternally cloaked by a fiery sunset - is a fabulous way to remind yourself of what makes this game so special.

,

Subaru Impreza Rally Car Prototype '01

Rally racing in the game benefitted massively from the major graphical updates introduced in GT3. Not only were the details of loose surfacing racing enhanced, but the actual driving physics themselves felt more true to life. So it’s fitting that Subaru’s then prototype competitor for the WRC was teased in this game. But we can’t include the Subie without leaving a slot for the…

,

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII Rally Car Prototype

Another prototype, but this time from Subaru’s fiercest rival Mitsubishi. It showed plenty of promise in its testing phase, and in the game, remains slightly quicker than the Impreza. However, these small victories never translated into any further championships for Mitsubishi, which it would’ve expected since the Evo’s predecessors racked up four dominant campaigns during the late Nineties.

,

Toyota GT-One (TS020) ‘99

Like the Astra, the Toyota GT-One came so very close to achieving the goal its creators had set out for it: to win at Le Mans. After years of trial and error with its TS020 predecessor, Toyota entered the GT-One into the 1998 edition of the famous race and came second. Toyota would of course claim five-straight outright Le Mans victories between 2018 and 2022.

Suzuki V6 Escudo Pikes Peak Special '98

Alas, we arrive at the car which ruined the game for most people: Suzuki’s Pikes Peak monster which took the form of a relatively humble Vitara. Though this is no ordinary Vitara: its mid-engined setup features a pair of turbocharged inline fours bolted together to provide 981bhp to a car which weighs just 800kg. Throw a stage-four turbo and super soft tyres on, and this thing demolishes just about everything else in the game. Excluding the Daihatsu Storia X4, obviously.
